In a significant step toward sustainable mobility, San Vicenç de Montalt has launched a Smart Bus Line that combines on-demand (DRT) and hybrid dynamic-route models within a continuous circular service. Powered by the Shotl platform and operated by Moventis, in collaboration with the municipalities of San Vicenç de Montalt and Caldes d’Estrac, the project represents a new evolution in flexible and efficient local transport.
From Monday to Friday, the service follows a predefined circular route connecting key points across both municipalities. At the same time, the service combines a series of fixed stops with others available on demand, which users can request via the mobile app. This flexible design reduces travel times for many journeys and enhances the overall passenger experience, while maintaining wide coverage and operational efficiency adapted to the dispersed geography of this coastal area of Barcelona with around 10,000 residents.
The continuous circular design allows passengers to complete part of their journey on different trips, adding a new level of flexibility and convenience.
On Saturdays from 10:00 to 21:00, the service operates entirely on demand. Without a fixed route, the system dynamically generates trips based on user requests in real time. This model responds effectively to irregular weekend demand, optimizing vehicle usage, minimizing unnecessary travel and reducing waiting times.
The platform employs real-time routing algorithms that operate on fixed schedules, incorporating on-demand stops within them. As routes are circular, the system enables bookings across multiple departures. On weekends, passengers can use the same app to request fully on-demand transfers.
Users can reserve trips, access weekday schedules, and monitor vehicle locations in real time via the application.
Furthermore, the system facilitates the seamless integration of on-demand stops into GTFS (General Transit Feed Specification) feeds. This advancement transforms local transportation systems without requiring new infrastructure or vehicles, supporting European sustainability objectives for more environmentally friendly and inclusive mobility.

The Smart Bus Line in San Vicenç de Montalt and Caldes d’Estrac demonstrates how local authorities and transport operators can work together to deliver scalable mobility. This collaboration between Shotl, Moventis, and the municipalities sets a practical example for other regions seeking to implement sustainable and cost-effective transport solutions.
