Tuobus Piacenza: Over 50,000 Rides in a Night-Time On-Demand Success Story

Piacenza’s Tuobus On-demand Bus service, developed by Shotl Transportation S.L. in collaboration with Tempi Agenzia, has recently celebrated a major milestone: over 50,000 passenger rides since its launch in May 2022.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the nature of the operation: each booking is processed individually, with no need for grouped reservations. This ensures a truly personalized and flexible public transport experience, tailored to the specific needs of each traveller.

A Fully On-Demand Service for the Night

Operating across a network of more than 360 virtual stops and covering an area of over 40 km², Tuobus is entirely on-demand and operates in evening hours:

Weekdays: from 8:30 PM to 12:00 AM
Weekends and public holidays: until 1:00 AM

This demand-responsive transportation service pauses in July and August, resuming in September to serve mostly the university student community of Piacenza. This seasonal structure allows the service to adapt to the fluctuations of demand and optimize resource allocation.

Public Holidays and Sustainable Efficiency

To enhance sustainability and operational efficiency during low-demand periods, Tuobus has extended its DRT service to include public holidays. This improvement supports better resource utilization, reduces empty vehicle trips, and maintains flexible coverage without fixed schedules — all in line with Piacenza’s broader commitment to innovative and sustainable mobility.

A Scalable and Citizen-Oriented Model

Tuobus Piacenza demonstrates that digital transformation in public transport can be achieved without large infrastructure investments. With a dynamic, user-centric model leveraging individual bookings and real-time matching algorithms, the service has surpassed 50,000 rides, reflecting strong public adoption. Its alignment with academic calendars and operational success make it a scalable solution for other university towns or areas with seasonal night-time demand, proving that technology can enable sustainable demand-responsive mobility.
